"Sometimes when I think about our story it feels predestined. Philip and I met as babies, and with him being a year older (and possibly wiser) I get giddy that I've known my future husband my entire life. Our families are close and our parents pooled together to have the same nanny, Alice. When I was two, I moved away to Virginia. Occasionally my family would head back to Evanston for holidays and summer vacation and Philip and I would see each other.
After many years of living in the southeast, my heart was pulling me back to Chicago. Finally, I moved back on February 1, 2013 and the next day I crashed Philip's Super Bowl party. Luckily, Philip is an amazing host with a more-the-merrier attitude. We began hanging out regularly after that. He would prepare the most delicious dinners, invite me to see local musicians, and introduced me to his friends. Our relationship grew naturally from our friendship.
After dating for a few years I was coming upon my 30th birthday. And I was a little edgy to say the least! Philip planned a beautiful day that began with breakfast in bed. Fresh squeezed orange juice, croissant, fresh berries, all of my favorites were spread out on a platter. Next, Philip told me to pack an overnight bag! He whisked me off to the Langham Hotel's Chuan Spa for an afternoon of indulging. After an epic massage session and glass of bubbly, Philip picked me up and we headed off to my next surprise: a helicopter tour of Chicago! I'm a bit of a thrill seeker, but Philip doesn't like heights so it means a lot that he planned this experience. We drifted over the city seeing our favorite places from a new point of view. Lurie Gardens, Belmont Harbor, Wrigley Field, around the skyscrapers... it was incredible! With all of the excitement we were famished. Thankfully the kitchen at Maple and Ash satisfied all of our cravings. When I couldn't eat another bite, our waiter brought out an ice cream sundae tower with more toppings than I could ever imagine. Delicious! We returned to the hotel, got into our cozies, and reflected on the day. Suddenly Philip mentioned that the clock turned midnight and although it was no longer my birthday he had one last surprise. As he spoke from the heart, he pulled out a box and presented an engagement ring. Philip could barely ask The Question before I threw my arms around him and yelled 'we're getting married!?'
As we plan our wedding we still make sure to enjoy our favorite things together. Philip is (patiently) teaching me how to cook, we wander the Botanic Gardens to find inspiration for our own plot of land, we spoil our puppies with treats and snuggles, we navigate each other's quirks and plan our lives together. Every day I wake up smiling knowing that I get to spend my life with my childhood sweetheart. "
